Hi Pal,
Welcome to Right Now! This is a newsletter where I do a quick rundown of some songs from projects released within the past month that I can’t get enough of. But first, a little housekeeping…
Right Now! is a Newsletter for paid subscribers. I recently transitioned into creating paid content and although most of my other content is free, I will be creating new content for paid subscribers. If you’re willing to support my work here, please consider it.
Psalm 137 — The Jonah Project
I have enjoyed every second of the three EPs released by The Jonah Project. Dawn, Dusk and Night are arguably some of the best alternative/indie rock releases of the year. Even with the wide variety of amazing songs, this one still stands out as an earworm. A progressive alternative rock tune that begins slowly and builds into a gritty chorus with emotional screams and seething riffs.
Yahweh Elyon — Tekoa, Nathan Staggers
I have a thing for eclectic projects and Tekoa’s EP is as diverse as they come. With Chamber Folk, Indie and Gospel elements all present, I have had a great time picking through this release. Of all the songs on this project, this tune has refused to let me go. Beautiful folk strums and muted trumpet fills, what more could I ask for?
One Another — WYLD
The Christian electronic space is filled with a lot of talent and WYLD has certainly established himself as someone to be counted among the very best. This instrumental tune highlights my favourite thing about indietronica — a seamless blend between indie rock and electronic music. It deserves the number of repeated listens it has gotten from me.
Bec Armour — The Blind Man
Bec Armour is one of the most soothing voices in Christian Alternative music and she has my attention every time she drops new music. Still, I was quite taken aback by just how perfect this song is. As a creative tale of the story of the healing of the blind man by Jesus in John 9, this is as quintessential as they come.
Wage The War (Ephesians 6) — Jesus Wannabeez
Jesus Wannabeez create Post-Hardcore/Melodic Metalcore inspired by verses from the Bible. For a little over a year, they have been going through the book of Ephesians and they finally dropped the final single a few days ago. Let’s just say that it’s the perfect end to this wonderful project.
Jubilee Day — Muntjac
Fast becoming one of my favourite storytellers in this scene, I fell for Muntjac’s music right from the first album. He is one of the artists that helped strengthen my belief in the need for Christian indie storytellers who carefully weave infectious stories with faith-based themes. This tune is a reflection on history that is told with an emotive cadence that had me hooked from start to finish.
sonic colors — Faith Lofi
Have you ever seen the name of a song and then after playing the song, it all makes sense? That’s exactly what this tune is. What makes it more impressive is that this is achieved so beautifully with an instrumental song that is exactly 2 minutes long.
That’s it for today.
Until next time.
Keep listening!
