Artist Spotlight: Tamsin Frost
Meet the soothing songwriter from York, UK.
Hi Pal,
Welcome to Artist/Band Spotlight. This is a newsletter where I have short introductory conversations with artists and bands on the Christian music scene.
Bio: I’m Tamsin Frost, a singer-songwriter from York, UK. I released my first single
Bittersweet in 2022 with follow-up singles
Psalm 23,
Little By Little, and
How To Start Over. Ultimately, my music is to allow people to find hope in less hopeful situations.
Q: Hi, can you talk to us about your inspiration and motivation for creating music?
My inspiration and motivation for creating music comes from needing a place to process my life experiences or the questions I have in my heart in light of who Jesus is as my Saviour. Music has always offered me the space to feel, process, and just be with whatever I was experiencing. But it is only recently that I have been able to include Jesus in this process and I think that’s when my music had a real turning point because I was able to tell more of a story of hope and ultimately redemption through the narrative of my songs. Musically, I’m inspired by music that makes me feel something. These inspirations include artists Tom Misch and Maggie Rogers, as well as Christian artistes Josh Garrels, John Mark Pantana, and Praise Lubangu just to name a few.
Q: How would you describe your sound and your creative process?
Peaceful, calming, and uplifting acoustic vibes are how I would describe my sound though I also like to venture into more definite pop sounds. This is mainly because I write lyrics first and the words flow better with that kind of sound. I want my lyrics to be the focus and for the music to accompany the feelings and emotions behind them. The lyrics and melodies usually come to me when I’m meditating on them whilst on a walk or even cleaning my house. I’ve found that sitting down doesn’t help much.
Q: How has 2023 been for you so far musically and what can folks expect from you for the rest of the year?
This year has been about being patient for me. I released a song in April called How To Start Over and whilst it originally flowed very easily, the actual crafting of the song felt like a massive effort which I really struggled with, although I’m really happy how it turned out in the end. That being said, I’ve been writing lots of songs whenever they come to me, and I will be posting little clips on my social media (tamsinfrostmusic) for the rest of this year — so keep an eye out. Hopefully, these songs will be released next year in the form of an EP or album, so also watch out for that!
