Hi Pal,
If you're new, you picked a great time to join us. Everyone else, you already know what time it is. If you missed it, here’s where you’ll find all the end-of-year lists.
We’re finally at the end of this list… I hope you had a great time counting down.
10. Practice by Jackie Hill Perry
Hip-Hop
If you’re active in Christian communities online, you probably know Jackie Hill Perry as a teacher and speaker. I was unfamiliar with her prowess as a rapper; honestly, she’s incredible. Everything about this from her cadence, lyrical delivery and beat selection is top-notch.
9. Burning by Zach Webb
Indie Folk
In February, Zach Webb released an EP and even back then, I knew it would crack my top 10. He has become a master of atmospheric emotive indie folk and everything about this EP showcases how good he is at expressing the vulnerable aspects of the Christian experience.
8. 24/2 by Colorvault
Art Pop, Electropop
Colorvault is undoubtedly one of my favourite groups out there today. Of the three EPs they dropped this year, this was the one that made me go, “Yeah, these folks are so good, it’s almost unfair”. It’s a well-thought-out collection, a listening experience that was mindblowing at times. I mean, the last track on this EP is just ridiculous.
7. Stories by Jonathan Allen Wright
Indie Folk
For an artist who excels at indie rock with surf-rock and nostalgic sensibilities and a fan who loves JAW in these elements, I would never have guessed that a folk release would become so dear to my heart. It feels odd to say, but this may be my best work from him.
6. The Wayfarer Journals V.I - Journeying by Dear Gravity
Ambient
Dear Gravity has enhanced my already elevated regard for his work in just four brief tracks. Although it seems illogical for a 10-minute listening experience to rank this high on my list, I can confidently say I listened to it many nights in a row. It’s truly an exceptional experience.
5. Holiness Cries by Bloodlines
Metalcore
In what I considered a lull year for the heavy scene, I can always count on Bloodlines to deliver something with quality and heart. It’s easy to forget how young they are on the scene compared to many already-established bands because of how quickly their sound has matured. Most importantly, this band does not compromise in their mission to deliver Christ-centered lyrics every time.
4. ISAAC ARE YOU OKAY? by isaacxhopes
Electronic, Alternative R&B, Afropop
I’ve been a longtime fan of isaacxhopes for years and concluded that my love for his music is deeply biased. He has a different way about him and finds new ways to surprise me with his compositions and production choices. My point is, if this is your thing, you won’t be able to get enough of him.
3. Echo by Leslie Perez
Neo-Soul, Alternative R&B
If you told me early in the year that Leslie Perez’s EP would be in my top 3, I’d have called your bluff. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always rated the quality of her music. Still, I never expected this EP to hold me by the throat the way it has in the last few months.
2. THE SEED by Sower
Indie Rock, Pop Punk, Emo Rock
It was a close call between the final two entries on this list. Ultimately, this EP is my second favourite of the year and is the best indie rock EP of 2024. Sower is a breath of fresh air on the scene and his two EPs are a prime example of what happens when artistic proficiency meets theological depth.
1. Sound The Trumpet by No Treaty
Hardcore
Poetically, a hardcore release began this list back in 50 and we have another one in the top spot. Even with the number of stellar bands on the scene, any fan of hardcore who listens to these guys will know that they are simply a cut above the rest. I’m excited for whatever comes next for these guys because I believe the scene has been missing a band like them for quite some time now.
Coming next, are the top 50 albums.
That’s it for today.
Catch you soon!
