Releases You May Have Missed In 2021 So Far
Albums, EPs and Singles that have made my 2021.
2021 has not pulled its punches in the world of Christian Alternative Music. There have been some amazing releases this year that I think are worth checking out.
This list is not going to be a ranked one (that will come later). Still, I’m fairly certain that a chunk of these releases will make it to my top ten albums/EPs of 2021 because they are just that good.
Alright, enough with the chit chat, let’s get into it.
Hymns I EP by Lovkn
Steven Luffkin, popularly known as Lovkn is fast growing into one of my favourite voices in Indie Folk. The singer-songwriter has a distinct tone that sticks with you as soon as you hear it. On Hymns I, he reimagines eight popular hymns, giving them a unique stripped-down acoustic feel.
Lovkn has a new studio album slated for October, and although Hymns I is a pretty short project that lasts for a little over 27 minutes; it’s already one of my favourites for the year.
Requiem by Rachel Wilhelm
Rachel Wilhelm is my biggest surprise of this year so far. I found a track off this album on a playlist on Spotify that I don’t even remember right now. But I’m so glad I did.
Requiem is one of the most unique sonic experiences I have had this year. An album whose theme centres on grieve, loss, hope and faith; Rachel paints a beautiful mural inspired by the experiences of the 2020 pandemic blending traditional hymnal sounds with neo-classical, chamber pop and progressive elements.
What Is My Hope EP by Tenielle Nada
I have one major criticism of Tenielle Nada and it’s quite simple - she still hasn’t given me a full-length album. This Australian singer-songwriter has crafted the most calming and soothing body of work this year so far. From the hypnotic string arrangements to the warm pianos and atmospheric sounds; this EP is intricate and deliberate in its approach and execution.
Start Over EP by Lion of Judah
Start Over EP is simply a combination of two singles by Lion of Judah namely ‘Start Over’ and ‘Closer’. This UK band simply knows how to do indie-pop, synthpop and electropop so well. I’m usually very critical of many new indie-pop acts because I believe they sacrifice too much of their alternative sound for the pop arrangements.
I’ve never had that problem with Lion of Judah and I hope I never will.
One Day [Single] by Jonathan Ogden
Earlier this year, Jonathan Ogden released an EP called Songs From Home. It’s a really cool collection of songs that I would normally have slotted into this list. But late last month, he dropped a single that I believe is more fitting for this list.
On One Day, Jonathan Ogden leans quite heavily on lo-fi hip-hop and alternative RnB sensibilities while still maintaining his signature easy-going vocal delivery. This combination creates a really smooth and surreal tune that I have had on repeat for quite some time.
The Voyager by ØM-53
ØM-53 certainly treads their own unique path in the music scene. Their first album, titled Defender, was a mix of synth-wave and retro wave sounds that would leave anyone who loves those sounds tingling.
The Voyager is the next step in their journey as they continue to explore new soundscapes in their chosen path.
Sunrise [Single] by John Mark Pantana
John Mark Pantana is a joy to listen to every time. Sunrise is technically a two-track EP with a 37-second instrumental cut called ‘Morning’ leading into the main song.
Sunrise is an indie-pop tune with funky and soulful undertones. It’s laidback in its execution and a perfect way to start the day.
Something Like A Secret by Yaz Williams
I do not have enough praise to give Yaz Williams for the work done on her debut album. Something Like A Secret is definitely my favourite folk album of 2021 so far.
It’s a beautiful and poetic masterpiece that bleeds deep emotions and a desire for God that is palpable. You definitely should be checking this one out.
From The Start [Single] by Bre Reed
If this track is any indication of what is to come from Bre Reed, then I cannot wait to hear it. My first interaction with Bre Reed’s work was on her album with Isla Vista Worship titled Open Heart. It’s an experience that has certainly stuck with me over the years.
From The Start is an elegant waltz dripping with a sense of maturity that will keep you coming back.
You Are Fullness by Young Oceans
Last, but certainly not least, on this list is an album that started the year for me. This album fits the description of ‘indie worship’ perfectly as it creates an intimate and ethereal experience that brings the listener face to face with the reality of the love of Christ.
You Are Fullness makes a bold statement in the Christian Alternative scene that will linger for quite some time.
That’s all for today. I hope you take the time to check out some of these tunes.
Until next time.
Keep listening!
