Hi Pal,
Anyone who has taken the time to explore the Christian instrumental electronic scene has probably heard of Stephen Bradley or his project called, sxxnt. Instrumental projects in any genre are usually fascinating to me and I believe that for all Christians who are musicians, the entirety of the creative process can be inspired by God. It has always felt restrictive to me when Christian music is solely defined by lyrical content because that kind of thinking excludes so many wonderful artists and albums.
Naturally, I was excited for the release of sxxnt’s new collaborative album with Brother Joe titled, Hymns in High-Fidelity. It is an instrumental lo-fi record that features elements from other corners of the electronic music soundscape like chillwave and electronica.
As a collection of reimagined popular hymns, I have a strong connection to most of the songs here but none of them hit me like Love & Sorrow. It was the first single to be released and it has haunted me ever since — in the best way.
It’s an instrumental reworking of the popular hymn, When I Survey The Wonderous Cross
, using the melody of another popular hymn titled, The Water Is Wide
. On the album, it acts as the album closer, and it is a fitting position for the tune with soothing guitar licks and solos, and ethereal strings all held together by an emotionally stirring beat track.
It’s a song that is easy to leave on repeat as it washes over the listener like calming waves.
