Hi Pal,
Six months ago, I sent out a newsletter highlighting some of my favourite songs based on the Psalms. Looking back on that piece, it’s interesting to me how much I have tweaked and changed things here stylistically since I started sending these out.
I am excited to have been doing this for about a year now and to celebrate this occasion, here are some Psalm songs for you.
Stick around for the updated playlist at the end. Also, you can check out the songs on all platforms using the embedded links on the titles.
Psalm 73 — The Jonah Project
If you’ve been reading this newsletter for a bit, you’re probably already tired of seeing these folks. Nonetheless, they dropped three EPs this year — Dawn, Dusk and Night — based on the Psalms. Anyone of those songs could have made this list, they’re all that good.
Psalm 145 — The Modern Post
As far as album closers go, this is one of the best out there. I’m not sure if Dustin Kensrue will ever continue this project. But, I will always be grateful for this album as one of the best indie rock/worship releases in the past decade.
Psalm 131 — Sons of Korah
This Australian band has dedicated itself to breathing musical life into the Psalms for over two decades already and they do not look like they are slowing down. One of my favourite things about them is the way they seem to focus on releasing singles exclusively.
Psalm 10 — Dominique Horsley
I wish Dominique Horsley had a full discography for me to immerse myself in. From all indications, she has the potential to be one of my favourite artists and her alt-pop/R&B interpretation of this passage is quite unique.
Psalm 27 (I Will Sing) — him + her
This folk-inspired, worship duo are relatively new on the scene. Their 2020 album — Even In The Dark — is a heart-warming debut that reflects their love for the Lord and their craft. This song is one of the standouts from the album.
Psalm 51 (Remastered) — Jason Silver
Jason Silver strikes me as someone who creates much purely because he loves it. As such, there is a crudeness to his approach that I find to be quite refreshing. He released 10 Volumes of a project titled, Love The Psalms, where he covered every single one of them. I chose Psalm 51 because it is one of my personal favourites.
Psalm 2 — Big Methuselah
Speaking of favourites, I can’t go on much further without mentioning Psalm 2. For this track, we are taking a trip to the year 1999, when Big Methuselah dropped an album called titled human sacrifice. We haven’t heard anything from them since, but this tune will continue to remain iconic in my books.
Psalm 63: My Soul Is Thirsting — Steve Angrisano
Hanging around in the ‘90s for a little while longer, Steve Angrisano’s debut album of 1997 gave us this gem. From this point, he has continued to have a wonderful career to date, blessing us with wonderful gems along the way.
Psalm 32 — Faith Rose
Faith Rose is a powerful new voice that arrived on the scene in the last couple of years. As a singer-songwriter, her potential is vast and this is reflected in her debut album — The Throughline — released in 2020. Psalm 32 is beautifully written and it’s one of my favourite compositions on the album.
ה׳ רועי (Psalm 23) — MIQEDEM
MIQEDEM is a messianic Israeli folk band that sings songs inspired directly from scripture in Hebrew to magnify Christ. They have two albums out and a third currently in the works. Words cannot describe how beautiful they are even without understanding the language. However, if you are the type of person that needs to connect lyrically, you can watch the embedded live video.
That’s it for today.
See you soon!
Don’t forget to let me know what you think. What songs would certainly make your Psalms Playlist and why?
