The Heavy Ones
Shorts: It's been a killer year in metal so far, here's why!
Hi Pal,
Welcome to Rapid Recommendations. A newsletter where I attempt to find new and creative ways to show you your new favourite album, song, or artist.
In the first quarter of 2023, I was worried that we were not getting enough Christian metal releases. My concern wasn’t just about the quantity but also about quality and variety. Fast forward to August and it now seems like I had absolutely nothing to worry about earlier.
10 of my favourite tunes so far? Let’s go!
Fall On Your Knees - HolyName, Brook Reeves || Hardcore, Post Metal, Shoegaze
It’s a prime contender for Song of the Year in my books. Beautifully reverent, deliciously heavy.
No Remembrance - Eonia || Melodic Metalcore, Progressive, Djent
It sounds like something out of the page of most modern metalcore bands. Balancing electronic feels with the guitars in a nice way.
Under A Thousand Suns - Ignite The Gods || Symphonic Blackened Death Metal
One of the biggest surprises of the year. Symphonic metal in any form is difficult to pull off and they make it look easy.
Idolatrous Tendencies - Legion of Adonai, Josh Montez || Deathcore
It’s not for everyone but for fans of this sound, it’s top quality and theologically sound.
Reconcile - Lacey Sturm || Alternative Metal, Hard Rock
Everyone and their mother who is a fan of Christian metal knows Lacey. This feels like a return to form in many ways.
Return To Dust - Theocracy || Power Metal
Theocracy is back! These folks are legends, and it looks like they didn’t skip a beat.
Dominus - War Of Ages || Metalcore
War Of Ages is the best Christian metalcore band active today, in my opinion. This song is an absolute banger.
Blacklist - Enoch || Alternative Metal
Her growls took me by surprise the first time I heard them because her singing voice is so beautiful. They have so much potential.
Cycles - Decyfer Down || Hard Rock, Melodic Hardcore
I haven’t enjoyed a Decyfer Down song like this since 2009! So much nostalgia in this one.
THE WORLD GROWS COLD - Man Ov God || Experimental DeathTrap
It’s weird. So weird. But in a good way.
