Hi Pal,
Welcome to this edition of Right Now, a newsletter where I list some recently released tunes that I love and give you reasons to love them too.
Before we get into the meat and bones of today’s newsletter, I have a few life updates.
I have been gone for a bit. I was writing a few exams and they were hectic. Thankfully, that’s all done for now.
By the time you get this, I should be on a mission trip that I’ve been planning for a bit which has also been consuming my time. I’ll do my best to balance things over here and always provide content and music recommendations.
Okay, let’s get back to it.
Razor Blade by Jimmy Clifton
Indie Folk
Starting this list with Jimmy Clifton who I recently discovered. Every time I think about the sounds that got me into indie folk — the simple strums, nasal high vocals and thoughtful lyrics — his style comes to mind. These days, I tend to want to find folk fusions and experimental stuff. Jimmy Clifton reminds me of staple indie folk that broke into the scene in the early 2010s. Razor Blade is a beautiful addition to his stellar 2023 releases and I can’t wait for the new album.

FR by Sharp Dialect
Alternative Hip-Hop, Alternative R&B
It’s been a few months since their last single but Sharp Dialect is finally back. FR (or For Real) encapsulates all the best things about this project — catchy beats, beautiful melodies and a refreshing lyrical honesty that reflects the Christian experience. I’ve been bopping this one for a bit and you should check it out.

JOSHUA I.IX // UNDER A THOUSAND SUNS by Ignite The Gods
Symphonic Blackened Death Metal
These days, my good friend
tends to cover metal here so I don’t get to talk about heavy music as much anymore. Still, I cannot begin to tell you how impressed I am with Ignite the Gods. With just two singles to their name so far, they have the minerals to become one of the best on the scene with powerful lyrics, intense growls and stellar instrumentation and production. The best thing about these two singles is that they were both performed live. All Links
In Awe by Sondae
Alternative R&B
Sondae just released his new album last month and I still cannot get over how great it sounds. Every week, I seem to have a new favourite and I guess we’re currently at In Awe. With funky electronic and acoustic feels interwoven in the production and a surprising Spanish section; this song is one of the best in the genre I’ve heard in quite some time.

Voices by Adryelle
Synthpop
I can always trust Adryelle to create an upbeat and fun tune and this song is exactly that, from a musical perspective. However, the power of Voices is solely in its message. It’s a warrior’s anthem that draws the battle line against voices of discouragement, unbelief and scorn. Once again, Adryelle uses her life experiences as a vehicle to bring encouragement to her listeners. It’s a touching listening experience.

Jingle by Fepeste
Alternative Rock, Indie Rock
There’s something very ‘early 2000s alternative rock’ about Fepeste’s new album. It seems like this is an era of music that he is fond of or inspired by. I have a lot to say about the new album later, but for now, I’d recommend Jingle to anyone who is a fan of this sound. It’s quite nostalgic in its composition but still retains enough freshness about it for the modern audience. In summary, it’s a pretty good song.
