intricately woven into tapestries of many moments
Kate Gurren, Lacey Sturm, Humble Feet & More.
Hi Pal,
Welcome to this edition of Right Now, a newsletter where I list some recently released tunes that I love and give you reasons to love them too.
God Is an Artist by Kate Gurren
Alternative R&B, Alt Jazz
Kate Gurren is one of those voices whose sound defies any sort of real definition. She generally tends to operate within soothing and calming rhythmic textures, which can sometimes be acoustic pop and other times, have tinges of neo-soul. This song is on the soulful side of R&B with elements of vocal jazz sprinkled in. It also has a mesmerizing trumpet solo that keeps me coming back.

Labyrinth by Muntjac
Alternative Rock, Indie Rock
“Muntjac is back!” is not a phrase I envisioned writing in 2023 as his 2022 album, Jubilee
, is still fresh on my mind and playlists. Still, here we are. Labyrinth has the storyteller qualities that I’ve come to expect from a Muntjac song even though it seems to move in a slightly different direction sonically when compared to previous records. I absolutely adore this tune and I can't wait for new ones like this.

Reconcile by Lacey Sturm
Alternative Metal
After Lacey Sturm left Flyleaf,
it was universally accepted within the scene that the band lost something. However, what was less discussed was how Lacey Sturm also lost something. Although her 2016 solo album, Life Screams,
was good and subsequent singles decent, I have always felt like something was missing sonically. I might be reading too much into it, but the band reuniting to tour seems to have brought the missing element back. This is without a doubt her best release since she left the band.

Matthew 6 by Tekoa, Rory Mckenna, Mark Barlow
Alternative Funk, Gospel
Tekoa always does a good job of bringing together some of my favourite genres in ways that I normally don’t expect to work, but somehow it does. This is a typical Tekoa tune with an alternative foundation and trumpet sections that are to die for. Mark Barlow’s soulful voice only elevates the song to new, delicious levels.

Beginning Of Everything by Raphah, inamomentimalive
Ambient, Post-Rock
These are two musicians that I respect immensely. Describing instrumental tunes can sometimes feel redundant or reductive because they are all about the experience. Still, there is something to be said for songs that match the mood of their titles and this song fits that bracket. It’s progressive, pensive, and relaxing all at the same time.

Sensational Splendor by Humble Feet
Folk
There is a simplicity to Humble Feet that I will always admire. It’s clear that a new album or EP is on the way from him, and I can’t wait for it. This song is a declaration of love and adoration for Jesus Christ, and I love everything about it. The saxophone solo also helps.
