The brainchild of singer-songwriter and producer
Ryan Lane, Civilized Creature hails from and well represents the Pacific Northwest, with its peculiar combination of indie pop, underground rap, and psychedelic turntablism. His tunes are an eclectic mish-mash of electronic and funk sounds, frequently paired with a head-bob-worthy beat while exploring the ups and downs of truth, following Christ, and the human experience.
Chinese Canadian artist
Jaimie Poon is most known for her empathetic style of songwriting and childlike, pure vocal tone. Her music can be described as a comforting hug and a versatile blend of neo-soul, jazz, and bossa nova, drawing influences from female artists Raveena and Amber Navran. Jaimie released her debut EP “Ines, My Dear” in May 2021 and caught the attention of listeners from Spotify’s “Fresh Finds” and Christian indie music platforms “Gospel Hydration” and “Amen Worldwide” to name a few. You can look forward to her album (in progress) which will be out in 2024.
Background & Inspiration: From Civilized Creature
"Fairest Lord Jesus" is the first in a series of classic hymns re-envisioned in modern/lofi/electronic styles, produced by Civilized Creature. An uptempo hip-hop beat paired with the piano & vocal stylings of Chinese Canadian artist Jaimie Poon, her smooth jazz vocal re-harms weaving throughout the main melody. Playful production accentuates the danceable groove of this typically mellow tune, which focuses on the beauty of creation, and how the beauty of the Creator surpasses it all!
My Thoughts
After the collaborations on his previous album, Pression, I’ve always wondered what would happen if Civilized Creature decided to sit in the producer’s chair and fuse his own creative sensibilities with that of some of my favourite artists — this single takes the first step in satisfying my curiosity and it’s a good step.
The song feels like the best of both worlds. It features Jaimie Poon’s soothing vocals and jazz-inspired harmonies, merging them with Ryan Lane’s head-bobbing beats. The highlight of the tune for me is the short piano solo before the final chorus where warm piano licks interplay beautifully with Poon’s ‘huu’ chants.
For folks who are already familiar with this hymn, it’s a sentimental reinterpretation that is interesting enough to keep them coming back. For new listeners, it’s a great way to introduce them to a song that tells of the greatness and beauty of our Lord Jesus.
Also, can I just say that I love the song cover art? It’s simply glorious!
