Background & Inspiration: From Jonathan Allen Wright
This song is working as an introduction to the project I’ve been working on this year. I’ve been trying to focus on areas I feel convicted in — habits to break or form.
This song is an introduction to struggling to comprehend how God moves and guides us even in our failure. Probably my favourite lyric is:
I’m a convict who’s on the run again on a treadmill inside a jail
That lyric holds how capable we are of escaping these things apart from God. We run stagnantly and then Jesus breaks in and pulls us out because He loves us. That’s the basis of this song and the introduction to the coming album.
My Thoughts
Anyone who is a regular here knows how much I am a fan of Jonathan Allen Wright’s music. After listening to this tune, my first thought was “I am glad he still manages to surprise me even after all this time.”
This song has an arena rock feel to it, with an anthemic chorus while still playing around with some of the indie rock feels that I’ve come to love from him.
It’s quite energetic but not bubbly or happy. Instead, the song’s pump is rooted in an underlying sense of desperation and longing that permeates the entire runtime — a desperation to please God and be better at loving Him. These are the emotions that I feel that the song expresses quite beautifully.
Still, within the lyrics, there is a clear call to shift our focus away from our failures and towards the grace that Christ gives.
