Background & Inspiration: From Jemimah Paine
‘Closure’ is the 2nd of 4 singles from my new studio EP. I wrote this song after suddenly losing my gran who tragically died on holiday. I found I could only get closure through writing a song about praising God even through the hardest of times. This song is being published through Wings Music Group. My producer Féz co-wrote the song with me along with Joe Baxter.
This song is extremely close to my heart, I was able to find healing and peace in God through writing it. Grief is never an easy topic to write about but it is needed more than ever in our world. When we let God into our grief and suffering He promises to be with us and journey with us through all the highs and lows.
My Thoughts
Emotive strums, warm keys and elusive synths act as the backdrop for the words that Jemimah weaves into a compelling tale of loss and hope in near equal parts. Sonically leaning into electropop, particularly when the drum kit kicks in, the rhythm of the song stands in stark contrast with the instrumentation and lyrics as she sings:
Hallelujah, screaming in the bad times, louder in the dark night
Hallelujah, I’ll keep on repeating again and again
When I bring it up, I get closer and closer
When I lift it up, I get closer to closure
This contrast is a representation of the conflicting emotions that seem to wrestle throughout the narrative of the tune. Yet, it is clear from the way it ends that the healing process has already begun.
Closure is a beautiful example of Christians handling grief and a reminder that the God that gave us these emotions sees us and is able to help us work through our pain if we can let Him in.
