Hi Pal,
REFORMED is the newest project on the Christian metalcore scene that seems to be catching everyone’s attention. Quite frankly, I tend not to get on “hype trains” as I try to avoid music that everyone seems to be talking about (even the accounts that I respect).
Notwithstanding, a short snippet of their first single, Smoke of Their Torment, back in April was enough to get my attention. This song was punchy and heavy with a really memorable chorus. The two elements that got me hooked were the talent of lead vocalist, Victor Borba and the band’s lyrical disposition.
For a vocalist, Victor Borba has the entire package — emotive singing vocals, hard-hitting growls, and great screams. Additionally, I fell in love with Christian metalcore through bands like For Today who were lyrically explicit and scripturally driven in their songwriting and it was very refreshing to hear this band towing the same line.
Martyr is their third single and it continues their impeccable record of impactful bangers. It starts off with a catchy synth intro before Borba jumps in with a long-drawn scream. I really enjoy how prominent the keys/synths are in this song and how they interact with the guitars.
As always, the lyrics are the highlight of this tune, and the chorus is gorgeous with the words:
Blessed is he, persecuted here for Me
For theirs is the Kingdom of God
And great is your reward in Heaven
It’s a song of encouragement for all those who suffer trials in this world and a reminder of the glory to come when we leave this world. Even deeper, this is a reminder of the commitment we have as believers to offer our lives to Christ because He did it first, which is reflected in the words:
…because You died for me
I’ll die for You…
Three singles in and I’ve been incredibly impressed by REFORMED. I’ve been listening to Christian metal for over a decade now and I’m glad to see that there is a new wave of artistes rising up who are willing to stand for Jesus and the truth of Scripture.
