the electronic edition
#Shorts: WYLD, Jeremy James Whitaker, Civilized Creature and more.
Hi Pal,
Welcome to this episode of the newsletter. As always, I’d like to welcome everyone who subscribed recently. Thanks for being here.
Those Who Love by WYLD
This tune is pulled from WYLD’s 2022 instrumental electronic album, From The Vine. Late last year, he announced on his Instagram that this project was coming to an end and I’m still not sure I have recovered from the news. If this is truly the last full-length album from this project — he dropped a short EP in November 2023 — then this is a brilliant conclusion to an amazing run of releases. Of all the great songs on the project, this one has a special place in my heart.
whoosh by Sam Bowman, GLADDEN
If you’ve been here for anything up to 3-4 months, then you have probably read me wax lyrical about Sam Bowman more than once. If you’re a bit new, here’s the summary: he released my favourite electropop album in 2023, and now I am obsessed with him. As it usually goes with great albums, different songs take turns as earworms and I’m currently in a whoosh season.
skip button by Jeremy James Whitaker
Sometime in 2021, I went on a lofi binge and I remember stumbling upon JJW’s regrowing skin EP and thinking to myself, “Wait this isn’t lofi…it’s weird…I like it”. I got into his music and I have not looked back since. He has a signature sound that I can recognize in how he experiments with timing and eclectic samples in his songs.
In The Ground by Civilized Creature
I’ve often called Civilized Creature the most prolific electronic artist in the Christian indie scene and he has continued to prove that with his extremely high level of productivity. Still, when I try to think of my go-to song from him, I find myself going back to this little song released back in 2019 on the album, The Way Back Home. For me, it captures a lot of the dynamism that I have come to expect from him as the years have gone by.
Praise Thee by Jaisua
I got on the Jaisua train a bit late, but I guess it’s better late than never. He’s quite difficult to pin down genre-wise — like a few others on this list — as he tends to exist somewhere within electropop, hyperpop and hip-hop. His 2022 album, Gldn Eyzz is a good example of this sonic diversity and it is a good introduction to his sound. Praise Thee is a classy tune from that album that I can’t get enough of.
OBEDIENCE by RXBØRN
One day, I will take the time to get into some fascinating genres/subgenres pockets that have emerged on the Christian alternative scene lately. One of those subgenres is Phonk, a subgenre of dance music with hip-hop and trap leanings. RXBØRN is one of the projects that have come into the limelight in recent years representing this fascinating sound and their 2023 album, I AM RXBØRN was one of my top electronic releases of the year.
That’s it for today.
Catch you at the next one!
