Week 10: 03.03.2024 - 09.03.2024
A snapshot of the major music releases for the week.
Hi Pal,
Before we get into it, I’d like to welcome all those who subscribed this past week.
For The Love of God — Fox & Foal
Folk Rock, Indie Worship (Album)
Fox & Foal are a worship duo that creates songs with folk leanings. They started releasing the singles from this album last year, so I have been expecting this one for a bit. For The Love of God is quite diverse in sound finding inspiration from different corners and fusions of folk music ranging from folk rock and folk-pop to traditional acoustic sensibilities. It’s a wonderful addition to my indie worship catalogue for 2024.
Call Me Down — Jonathan Allen Wright
Indie Folk (Single)
After two albums of exploring and creating tunes within the indie rock soundscape, it feels like JAW is slowing down a bit and opting for an ethereal indie folk vibe. This tune reminds me a lot of his 2021 album, Wind — an underrated record, in my opinion — but it’s more mature and the production value is better. All in all, I love this song and I look forward to this new chapter from him.
Watchman — Josh Garrels
Alternative Folk (Single)
A new album from Josh Garrels is at the top of my musical wishlist for 2024. He is one of the most prolific and important voices in Christian folk and this song is another clear reminder as to why that is the case. It’s a song of hope and rest in Christ especially for these days that we live in. Give it a listen.
Sweeter — Darla Baltazar
R&B (Single)
Darla Baltazar has this 90’s and early 2000’s R&B sound in the bag and every time I listen to her, it’s unending waves of nostalgia. Within all this musical goodness is a focus on scripturally sound lyrics and that is what I love the most about her. I know there is a new album on the way and it can’t come any sooner.
Bobby — IMRSQD
Alternative Fusion (Single)
As someone who writes about music a lot, there is a tendency to want to put an artist within a particular sound or genre. Sometime in 2021, I kind of gave up on IMRSQD on this front because it became apparent to me that he does whatever he wants. He’s back with a chill indie pop tune with alternative hip-hop sensibilities. It’s been on repeat since I heard it because that’s just what he does.
Perfect Friend — BEACH W, Embleton
Indie Rock (Single)
I’ve missed BEACH W and it’s great to them again. As for Embleton, he’s been on a bit of a roll this year and I’m all for it. This song is beautifully soothing, with a relevant message and a dazzling horn section. I love everything about it.
Burning — Zach Webb
Indie Folk (Single)
Zach Webb is one of those artists that I want to hear more from. Emotive and atmospheric indie folk is a favourite of mine and he seems to know how to do it well. This is his second single of the year and I hope we get a project soon.
Lately — Jackie Legere
Alternative R&B (Single)
Jackie Legere is another artist on this list that I wish released music more often. I have loved every single she has dropped and this song is no exception. In a way, it is a song of repentance reminding us that God is always there for us and cautioning us to avoid getting too caught up in life that we forget him.
Bless the Lord (Psalm 34) — K.Gauiter, Aliens and Pilgrims
Alternative (Single)
If you’ve been here for a while, then you know that I have a thing for creative interpretations of scriptures, particularly the book of Psalms. It’s been a little while since K.Gauiter released new music and this is a wonderful return. As for Aliens and Pilgrims, this is my first encounter and it is a pretty good introduction. I will be listening to more from them.
Somehow I Know It’s Love — Young Oceans
Art Rock, Experimental Indie, Devotional Worship (Album)
We started the week with this gem and it has taken over my ears since it dropped. I have been following Young Oceans for a little while and every album has a distinct and unique feel to it. Still, I can’t shake the sense that there is something extra special about this album and we will look back on it as a pivotal landmark in an already impressive catalogue of albums.
That’s it for today.
Catch you at the next one!
