Week 13: 24.03.2024 - 30.03.2024
A snapshot of the major music releases for the week.
Hi Pal,
As always, links are embedded in the titles.
Soul Talk — Darla Baltazar
Alternative Soul, R&B (EP)
I’ve been waiting for this for a few months now and I’m glad it’s finally here because Darla Baltazar’s consistency on the scene has been outstanding. She creates music with nostalgic feels of 90s and early 2000s R&B and Soul with a modern twist and I’m sure that I will have this album on repeat.
FLOWERS OF THE FIELD — FLOWERS OF THE FIELD
Indie Folk (Single)
I’m always fascinated by artists who create separate projects for different musical expressions. Adriel Ayala came into my music library — and life — through her synthwave/electronic project, Adryelle. Flowers Of The Field explores her ethereal folksy side and it’s a gorgeous album. I highly recommend it to fans of the genre.
Fade and Melt — Colorvault, Young Oceans
Art Rock, Pop (Single)
Will we get another Colorvault album for the third year in a row? Who knows! There doesn’t seem to be an end to the inspiration and creativity flowing among the trio that make up this incredible band. They have never dropped a bad tune and they are not about to start today.
clouds — Jaisua
Alternative Pop (Single)
Finding Jaisua’s music has been one of the highlights of my year already and I have played catch-up with his entire catalogue of songs. I love how unpredictable he is and how I can’t quite tell what side of him I will hear when a new song comes out. The common denominator is that they all lead the listener to think about God.
White As Snow — Flickering Wick
Chill Indie Rock (Single)
Flickering Wick releasing a debut single inspired by Psalm 51 feels perfect for the Easter weekend. Fans of Christian alternative music will recognize this song as a cover of the classic tune by Jon Foreman. Still, there are nuggets of originality in this version that make me excited to hear new music from this project.
Worlds: Connected — Antarctic Wastelands
Ambient (Album)
If you’ve been here for a bit, then you probably know how much I love ambient music and this project in particular. Last year, Antarctic Wastelands released Worlds: Apart and it was one of the ambient albums of the year, in my opinion. This new release builds on the good work of its predecessor and I’m looking forward to more from the Worlds series.
In His Hands — From The Ground Up
Indie Worship (Single)
Listening to this band feels like interacting with a new friend. Soon after the release of their debut EP, they are back with a new single that continues to reflect their desire to lean and rest in Christ. This is a song of surrender and it is quite apt for the season we are in.
Psalm 27:4 — Verses, Joel Limpic
Singer-songwriter, Folk (Single)
Who doesn’t love a new song by Verses? Scripture-inspired tunes are part of the reasons why this newsletter exists in the first place. I love how the lyrics of this tune make the listener pause and meditate on the content of this verse — which is probably the entire reason why this project exists in the first place.
You Stepped In — Russ Mohr
Gospel Fusion, Funk, Soul (Single)
Gospel is probably the last genre that I would normally write about here. But there’s something unique about the way that Russ Mohr does it that keeps me coming back to him. Having sampled his entire discography, I love how he always draws from multiple genre pools and he’s at it here again, ever so subtly.
Here Is Love — Hymnbient
Ambient (Single)
It feels appropriate to end this special Easter weekend edition with an ambient cover of a classic hymn. And I’m glad I know a project that specializes in creating wonderful songs that fit this description.
That’s it for today.
Catch you at the next one!
