What You Might Have Missed When I Was Missing
A snapshot of my favourite music releases in a little over a month.
Hi Pal,
If you’re new, welcome. Thanks for sticking around for the silent weeks. I’m slowly coming out of my hiatus and there is no better way to get back into the groove than recommending some cool new albums and EPs. As always, links are embedded in the titles.
Albums
Fly Me to the Moon and Leave Me There — Matthew Parker
EDM, Synthpop
Release Date: April 26th, 2024
Matthew Parker has been one of the best electronic artists on the scene for over a decade. I’m glad we finally have a new album from him and it’s a classy listen from start to finish.
Healing Hymns — Rasmus H Thomsen
Piano, Instrumentals
Release Date: April 26th, 2024
If you’re into soothing piano renditions of some of your favourite hymns, then Rasmus H Thomsen has an album specially curated for you. I can’t express just how much I adore this release.
Crucified in Christ — Jimmy Clifton
Indie Folk
Release Date: May 3rd, 2024
Jimmy Clifton is the most prolific indie folk voice on the scene today and it’s ludicrous to think that he already has two albums out before the halfway point of 2024. He’s really good though, so I can’t complain.
The Crocus — Will Carlisle
Alternative Folk, Indie Worship
Release Date: May 10th, 2024
This one has been in my ears consistently over the past two weeks, especially during my devotional moments. Will Carlisle has crafted something really special here and I can’t wait to speak more about it here.
The Prodigal — Josiah Queen
Indie Folk
Release Date: May 24th, 2024
This album has been in the works for a little while now and although I’ve heard most of the songs here as single releases, it was still a surreal listening experience when I played the LP whole thing yesterday.
When It Rains — Taylor Armstrong
Chill Indie Rock, Dreampop
Release Date: May 24th, 2024
Taylor Armstrong was one of my earliest discoveries on the indie scene, long before I decided to start writing here. A few years have passed and he remains one of the best to do it. My only downer with this album is that it is too short.
EPs
how it feels to forget — Jeremy James Whitaker
Electronica, Alternative
Release Date: April 19th, 2024
As a fan of electronic music, I’m eating well this year. I’ve been a long-term advocate of a complete LP from JJW because he has some of the most intriguing ideas on the scene in this genre. For now, I’ll spend a few weeks with this EP.
24/1 — Colorvault
Art Pop, Electropop
Release Date: April 19th, 2024
Colorvault has quickly become one of the most prolific bands on the scene with back-to-back album/EP releases since 2021. In all this time, they have not dropped the ball and continue to impress, finding new ways to get us to focus on God.
Grafted In — Raphah, Patrick Spatz, inamomentimalive
Ambient, Post-Rock
Release Date: May 3rd, 2024
Listening to these folks always makes me feel so proud. I’m a sucker for ambient and post-rock music, so when I find artists who genuinely and consistently put out music in those soundscapes that are founded on and inspired by scriptures, it makes my heart swell.
MATIN: Love — Jess Ray
Folk, Singer-songwriter
Release Date: May 10th, 2024
Over the years, I’ve had some concept EP series that have become some of my favourite musical projects in Christian music. In recent times, Jonathan Ogden’s Seasons EPs and The Jonah Project’s Psalm Project (Dusk, Dawn & Night) come to mind. The way Jess Ray’s MATIN series is going, it is going to join that list by the of the year.
Finally, I’ll be back to full content creation on the 1st of June. I can’t tell you all how much I needed this break to just be away for a bit. I put a lot of pressure on myself with this newsletter and I needed some time off to just be a fan and lover of great music without “the need to write”. Thanks again for sticking around.
That’s it for today.
Catch you at the next one!
