Prophecy // Ire Toluhi
[Indie Folk] Meet Ire Toluhi and listen to her new single.
Hi Pal,
My Review
Prophecy is a song about reliance on God’s sovereignty. Often, the idea of God being sovereign is presented with an air of powerlessness for us as people and can be misinterpreted with concepts that lead to frustration. Ire’s tune reminds us of God's loving and intentional nature and how it permeates circumstances of uncertainty.
Lyrically, Ire Toluhi leans into Old Testament references, starting the song with the words:
I see myself in David’s rhymes
I see God’s purpose in his pain
He makes things beautiful in His time
And I won’t have it any other way
There are also callbacks to the book of Psalms for those who listen intently enough to catch them. The chorus is partly in the Yoruba language, with the words 'alewi 'alese, which can be loosely interpreted as “the one that says it does it” or “the one who can do what he says”, and Awimayehun which means “The One Who Promises and Fulfills” which is one of the expressions for God’s faithfulness in Yoruba culture. I also enjoy the call-and-response between her and Bode Brown here.
I have many reasons to adore this song. Being from the same country and the Yoruba tribe, the addition of Conga Drums1 in the mix resonated with me.
Nonetheless, regardless of understanding, the message and heart of the song are clear enough. Being from Nigeria, I can tell you for a fact that Ire Toluhi’s sound is quite rare. But somehow she manages to make it work and weaves in elements of her cultural inclinations to create something distinct.

Meet Ire Toluhi
Ire Toluhi is a Nigerian singer-songwriter whose soul-stirring lyrics are “like something from out of a healing book.” Her passion transcends mere singing as she aims to point listeners to the hope of Christ.
Born and raised in Nigeria, her work is deeply rooted in the Scriptures and themes of healing, identity, and faith. She guides listeners toward the hope of Christ and explores transformation and the overlooked and sometimes demonised nuances of human experience.
Song Inspiration
Prophecy was birthed upon meditating on how intentional God is about our lives, and bringing His promise over us to fruition. I’ve seen through various Biblical examples how no experience or hardship is a waste or digression from His plan, as He shows us through the fulfilment of the Prophecies of Christ, our salvation, and the Holy Spirit.
Scriptures such as Jeremiah 29:11 demonstrate God's intentionality and should provide us with assurance. Sometimes, believers overlook the prophetic aspects of the Tanakh2, which is something I recommend studying, as it has truly strengthened my faith and reverence for God.
My beliefs led me to study the Lord’s appointed times, and left me in awe of His meticulous faithfulness in fulfilling His Word and ensuring the plan of salvation came to pass. I hope this song serves as a reminder that, regardless of how long we wait, He brings His word to pass. It is also a comfort to know that God is never late, and with our journeys, nothing is or nothing remains a mistake. [see Romans 5:1-5, Ecclesiastes 3:11,12,14]
I hope to release more music this year, and I look forward to more songs that speak the Scriptures and remind us of who God is, and who we are in Him, as He inspires and provides.
