Out Of Left Field
Five artists/projects that are carving out their own unique spaces in Christian 'Alternative' Music.
For over a decade now, I’ve been fortunate enough to listen to a wide array of sounds in Christian music.
Today, we’re looking at artists, bands or projects that have carved unique — and sometimes odd — spaces for themselves; breaking away from conventional expectations, even in the alternative music scene.
Okay, that’s enough with the chit chat. Let’s get into it.
Psallos
Psallos is a collective of musicians that I am fascinated by. They are committed to creating artistic musical experiences that are based on sound Biblical truth. Nothing captures this mission more than their last three albums: Romans, Hebrews and Jude.
Genre(s): Jazz, Indie, Folk, Spoken Word, Blues
Recommendations: Romans, Hebrews, Jude
Holy Hope
I have listened to many instrumental projects across a wide range of genres and I have not found anyone that exudes the simple, subtle and majestic aura of Kerry Douglass Keyser’s Holy Hope. Her music is soothing, calming, peaceful and unassuming.
Genre: Piano
Recommendations: Longing For Home, Transformation
October Light
Ska has always been a niche genre of music with a limited but dedicated fanbase. From the heart of Croatia, October Light keeps Ska alive, blending it with pop-rock and alternative elements.
Genre: Ska
Recommendation: Till The End
Daygraves
Travis Estes has already found his way into one of my previous lists (see here) through another project of his called Medical Morning. If Medical Morning impressed me on first listen, then Daygraves totally blew me away. This Blackgaze project is worth the listen for any fans of the genre.
Genre(s): Blackgaze, Post Rock, Post Metal, Unblack Metal
Recommendations: Silver (EP), Nocturns (Split)
Satellite View
In all honesty, I’m not sure if we’ll hear from Christopher Lewis’ Satellite View again, but his debut album is enough to earn a place on this list. The album, This is NOT the End, is one of the most memorable experimental projects I’ve heard in a while.
Genre: Experimental
Recommendation: This is NOT the End
That’s it, folks.
Until next time.
Keep listening!
